53. Starting Over.

Updated: 4 days ago

I spent a lot of years thinking I had missed my chance.

Life had already taken me through addiction, recovery, regret, faith, family, and more than a few hard lessons. By the time I got sober at 48, music felt like something I loved — not something I was still allowed to chase.

Turns out, I was wrong.

Music has always been part of my life. I’ve played it, written it, walked away from it, come back to it, and probably used it to say things I didn’t know how to say any other way.

But somewhere along the road, life got pretty messy.

Addiction took a lot from me. It affected the people I loved. It changed relationships. It left behind things I wish I could undo.

Getting sober didn’t magically erase any of that.

What it gave me was the chance to start rebuilding.

Slowly.

My faith became stronger. My family began to heal. I started learning how to live differently. And eventually, I started writing differently too.

The songs coming out of me weren’t about pretending the past hadn’t happened. They were about looking straight at it.

Regret. Recovery. Faith. Second chances. Learning to forgive yourself. Learning how to be alone. Finding your way home.

And somewhere in all of that, the idea of making music seriously came back.

At 53.

Not exactly the age most people picture when they think about someone becoming a recording artist.

But maybe that’s part of the reason I’m doing it.

Because I know I’m not the only person who has looked at their life and wondered if they waited too long.

Maybe you’re 40.

Maybe you’re 53.

Maybe you’re 70.

Maybe the thing you’re starting has nothing to do with music.

I don’t think starting over means pretending everything that came before didn’t happen. I think it means deciding that what happened before doesn’t get to decide everything that comes next.

My first single, Bottom of the Bottle, is out now.

There are more songs coming. More stories too.

I have no idea exactly where any of this will lead.

But I know this:

I’m 53.

I’m starting over.

And for the first time in a long time, that feels like exactly where I’m supposed to be.
